Ear piercing is one of the earliest forms of body modification in history. There are a number of different locations on the ear that you can have pierced, each one unique and eye catching. Below you can read information on each individual piercing and their placement on the ear.

This Diagram depicts the various placements on the ear that you can have pierced:

This Diagram shows the most common piercings that are asked for here at Real however depending on the ear anatomy we can do many others too!

Lobes

This piercing is one of the least painful piercings to experience. It is considered a tradition in many cultures and religions for young girls and boys to have either one or both pierced at young ages.  Often people will choose to have their ‘Upper Lobes’ pierced at a later date as well. Here at Real we pierce children from ages 6 years and up with parents present and consent given. We use a sterile ‘push system’ called STUDEX to pierce ear lobes as well as freeze spray to numb the area. This technique causes considerably less trauma and pain to the traditional ‘piercing gun’ which is now boycotted by many professional piercers all over the world due to the lack of sterilization, accuracy on position of the piercing and trauma it causes to the ear.  We have a variety of top quality earrings for your newly pierced ears, including surgical steel, titanium or 9ct Yellow or White Gold.
We also offer having you ears pierced with needles, this is equally as effective, sterile and as favoured as our STUDEX system. If you find you have thicker ear lobes than the average person we can provide you with longer stemmed earrings to ensure the swelling of your ears does not become uncomfortable after you have had them pierced. Here at Real we pride ourselves on providing and outstanding experience for children and their parents on their first piercing, we are recommended by many parents county wide and international.

 Helix/Rim

Occasionally also referred to as the ‘top of the ear piercing’ this piercing is extremely popular, usually it is the next piercing most clients request after their initial lobe piercing. We use either the STUDEX system (depending on the placement) or the needle technique. The helix piercing is more painful than the lobes but is an equally quick process.  It may be uncomfortable to sleep on the ear that you choose to have pierced so take that into account when choosing which side you would like pierced.

Here at BMG Jewellery we offer stunning custom made jewellery to wear in your Helix piercing you can view them here.

Healing time: 12 weeks Initial pain will usually be relieved after 1 week

Auricle

A freshly piercing Auricle by Real’s body piercer: Jenny Kerr

The auricle piercing is much like the Helix piercing in terms of pain and healing times however we would only use the needle technique to perform this piercing.  It draws attention to the center of the ear and is a fun alternative to the regular helix piercing. It is wise to consider your sleeping habits again before getting this piercing.

 Conch

Conch piercings are positioned in the curved part of the ear cartilage. You can have multiple conch piercings depending on the size of your ear; they are discrete as they are located on the inside of the ear.  Once healed, you can choose from a range of rings and studs to wear in you piercing. Conch piercings can be painful to have pierced as the cartilage on that area of the ear can be quite thick.

Tragus piercings are a trendy piercing that remains to be popular in the teenage generation as well as adults. Generally they are considered to be relatively painless, they are eye catching and dainty depending on the jewellery you choose to have.  It may be uncomfortable to sleep on the ear that you choose to have pierced so consider which side is best beforehand.

 Anti-Tragus

A fleshly pierced Anti-Tragus and double helix by Real’s body piercer: Jenny Kerr

This piercing is a unique alternative to the common Tragus piercing; it is of a similar pain level to be pierced but is more noticeable as it is toward the outer part of the ear.  Some people choose to have both pierced so they can have a BCR ring joining the two together.

Jewellery type:  Titanium 1.2mm curved barbell or BCR ring

Snug

A freshly pierced Snug performed by Real’s body piercer: Jenny Kerr

This piercing truly stands out on the ear; it is positioned dead central to the middle of the ear. If you want a piercing that people will notice then this is the one for you. Pain wise it is of a moderate level, less painful than the Conch but possibly more than the Tragus or Anti-Tragus.  It is best to consider which side you sleep on before having this piercing.

Forward Helix

These piercings are great if you want to have multiple earrings, we often piece three travelling up  from the forward rim of the ear. Pain level is similar to that of the regular Helix piercing; this can be painful to sleep on especially if you choose to have multiple piercings done at the same time.

 Rook

A freshly pierced Rook performer by Real’s body piercer: Harley Fox

Rook piercings are dainty and discrete as they are reasonably hidden inside the ear, This piercings is amongst my most favoured ear piercings. They are unique but are gaining more and more interest from clients. The pain level of the procedure is moderate much the same as the Tragus piercing. Like most of the other ear piercings it is wise to consider which side of your body you sleep on before committing to the 12 week healing period as it may be painful to lie on.

Here at BMG Jewellery we offer stunning custom made jewellery to wear in your Rook you can view them here.

Scaffold piercings and two separate piercings from the outer rim of the ear to the forward helix area with one bar joining the two piercings together. This piercing can be painful as it is two piercings in one and we use a large 1.6mm needle and bar.  There is a vast range of jewellery to wear in your healed Scaffold piercing.

Daith

A freshly pierced Daith performed by Real’s body piercer: Jenny Kerr

Company Owner of Real & BMG Jewellery Richard Soper has been gathering information from each piercing client that has had the medical daith piercing, to determine how the piercing has helped each individual with their condition. Having your daith pierced is a quick process and mostly reported as being relatively painless though a little uncomfortable. Because it is pierced on the inside of the ear it’s is usually less uncomfortable to sleep on that side than if you have had your Tragus or helix pierced.
